I’ve said this before, but when I think of summer I think of watermelon. They go hand in hand. You can’t have summer without watermelon! With that being said, at our house we eat LOTS of watermelon. Not only is it delicious, but there are many health benefits of eating it as well!
High in Lycopene: This is a powerful carotenoid antioxidant that gives fruits and vegetables a pink or red color (most often associated with tomatoes). This antioxidant is associated with decreased stroke risk factors as well as potential anti-cancer activity.
Helps with Dehydration: Watermelon is 91.5% water, so it can help keep you hydrated. Watermelon is also a natural diuretic, which increases the flow of urine without straining the kidneys (unlike alcohol and caffeine).
Muscle/Nerve Support: Rich in potassium, watermelon is a great natural electrolyte and therefore helps regulate the action of nerves and muscles in our body.
Improves Eye Health: Watermelon is a great source of beta-carotene, which is converted in the body to vitamin A. This helps protect against macular degeneration and night blindness.
Immune Support: The vitamin c content is high in watermelon which helps boosts the immune system, preventing illness.
So, this summer put down the cookie and enjoy some watermelon for dessert! 🙂
